The decision to become a fishing guide has been a good one. I have met some great people and had some great trips. Most of the trips have gone extremely well. I have greatly enjoyed helping people catch fish, teaching them how to catch fish and helping them have a good time while fishing. Many people have commented that I don't just take them fishing, I teach them how to fish.
I have been an avid fisherman my entire life. I love to go fishing and catch lots of fish. The species of fish I target varies greatly depending on the type and size of fish the lake has to offer. The time of year and the weather also impact what species of fish I try for that day. Fish feed every day and barring adverse weather, can be caught every day, all year. When cooler weather hits in the fall, fishing can be excellent, but the bite can be more inconsistent. Fish will make big moves in the fall and eventually stack in spots.
Ice fishing can also be excellent in the area. We typically have excellent catch rates through the ice. Because there are no boat restrictions, I can accommodate larger groups ice fishing. Ice fishing is great for families with children. The children can take breaks from fishing and run around on the ice. Ice fishing is also easy for handicapped people. I can often pull them right out to the spots on my ice sled/shack. They just have to sit and fish. I grill brats on the ice.
The lakes in this area are most conducive to crappie, bass, bluegill and catfish. Walleye are present in some lakes, but walleye are better suited to bigger reservoirs in this part of the country. A few lakes in the area have northern pike. I fish mostly for crappie, bass, and bluegill. We have excellent numbers of those three species and it is not uncommon to catch walleye or catfish while fishing for panfish or bass. During the slow times of the year catching ten fish a day can be a good day. During the active times of the year we expect to boat hundreds of fish a day. The species of fish and the size of fish we target affects catch rates.
To me one the most enjoyable parts of fishing is taking kids out and helping them catch lots of fish. Taking my son and his friends fishing through the years produced some great memories. Even though children are more work in a boat, I do not charge for children. I try to keep the method of fishing simple and try to catch lots of fish. I do not use live bait. For those parents that have more experienced children, we can work on more advanced and difficult fishing techniques.
