We anchored on different spots and caught walleye, bass, bluegill and a nice crappie. They kept a good mess of nice bluegill and were able to catch 6 keeper walleye. An enjoyable family day on the lake.
May 29, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met a father and his three sons at Walnut Creek for an afternoon of fishing. The target was to catch numbers of fish and try for some nicer fish. They caught lots of bluegill up to 8 inches along with some crappie around 10 inches. The storms held off and the kids had a great time catching lots of fish.
May 29, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I took a person and his visiting son-in-law to Wanahoo for a morning fishing trip. We started out targeting bass and the bite was very good. They caught good numbers of quality bass. The son-in-law is from Minnesota and wanted to learn some techniques to catch panfish so we switched tactics and caught good numbers of bluegill and crappie. The forecasted storms did not materialize and they had a very good morning on the lake.
May 28, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met a father and son at Walnut Creek for the day. They wanted to target panfish and the panfish were on fire. They caught countless numbers of 6 to 8 inch bluegill, good numbers of quality crappie up to 14 inches and a half dozen bass. With the exception of a brief light rain, the weather was very comfortable and the fishing was outstanding.
May 27, 2015
Youngman Lake- I met a father and son at Youngman for an afternoon of fishing. We targeted panfish and the bite was tougher than hoped for. They caught some nice crappie up to 11 inches and bluegill up to 9 inches and learned a new technique to catch fish. We just did not catch the numbers of fish I try to put people on.
May 26, 2015
Maple Creek- I took a father, son and a family friend to Maple Creek for the day. Another chilly day with very good fishing. They caught lots of largemouth bass and bluegills along with about thirty five walleye. They kept eight walleye from 16 to 20 inches with the rest being under the 15 inch minimum. A very good day on the lake.
May 23-25, 2015
Milford Lake, Kansas- My son and I went to Milford for a weekend fishing and camping trip. This was our first trip to Milford. When we go to a new lake, we search locations for different species of active fish and target the species we like best. Catfish (blues, flatheads and channels), wipers, and smallmouth bass were extremely active. We chose to target the smallmouth bass and were able to catch excellent numbers of smallies with many from 14 to 17 inches. We also caught largemouth bass, walleye, sunfish, bluegill, black and white crappie, and drum. Some stormy weather that forced us off the lake at times but lots and lots of fish and a very good weekend of fishing with my son.
May 22, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met a couple at Walnut Creek for a half day of fishing. The fish were nowhere to be found on the spots of my previous trips this year and it looked like it was going to one of those days where I do not find the fish. I went to a different part of the lake, made a major presentation change and we found the fish. They caught very few fish the first half of the trip and caught lots of fish the last half of the trip. They wanted to keep some for a meal and we kept about 20 nice crappie up to 12 inches and bluegill up to 8 inches. A Jekyll and Hyde day on the lake.
May 20, 2015
Maple Creek- I took two people to Maple Creek for a day of fishing. The weather was cold, windy and wet--good thing the fish were biting. We targeted walleyes and they were able to keep their limit of 16 to 18 inch fish in a couple hours. They continued to fish and caught and released so many walleye and bass, they decided to finish up the trip by catching the some of the multitudes of 7 to 8 inch bluegill the lake has to offer . Another excellent day of fishing at Maple Creek.
May 19, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I had a trip with two friends to Wanahoo for some bass fishing. A cold front dropped air temperatures into the 40's but the bass did not seem to notice. The winds were manageable and we were able to fish anywhere on the lake. They caught very good numbers of quality bass in different locations. A good day of bass fishing regardless of weather conditions.
May 17, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I took two people to Wanahoo for an afternoon of fishing. He fished for bass and she fished for whatever was biting. She could catch many crappie and bluegill but they were smaller. He caught some nice bass but the high winds blew us off the spots where the numbers of bass were located. A pleasant day of fishing with some good bass, just not the numbers we often catch at Wanahoo.
May 16, 2015
Youngman Lake- I met two ladies at Youngman for the day. One of them had recently moved to the area and wanted to learn how to catch panfish in the area. The other was a friend who had never fished before. I taught them how use the rods and reels and we started fishing. The panfish wanted a very light presentation and the wind picked up and made it difficult to feel the bite. They were still able to go home with some very nice crappie up to 12 inches and bluegill up to 9 inches. I taught one of the ladies how to filet fish and they went home with a good mess of fish to eat.
May 15, 2015
Lake Cunningham- I met a grandfather, son and grandson at Cunningham for a day of fishing. We were out to catch crappie and Cunningham offered up plenty of them. They caught very good numbers of crappie and were able to keep a limit of mostly 9 to 9 1/2 inch fish. The storms forced us off the lake for a while but other than that, the winds were light and the fish were active. A great three generation day on the lake.
May 13, 2015
Lake Cunningham- I met two people at Cunningham for an evening fishing trip. The focus was to help them learn how to catch walleye. I showed them my preferred method for walleye fishing and I took them to different areas of the lake to try and catch walleye. The high winds made some areas difficult to fish but they were able to learn the basic technique and catch five walleye along with crappie, bass, catfish and bluegill. Even though they did not catch as many walleye as I would have liked, they learned the technique and will have more successful days of walleye fishing in the future.
May 12, 2015
Lake Cunningham- I had a trip to Cunningham with a person. We fished quite a few areas and caught many crappie along with some bass, walleye, bluegill, and catfish. The crappie were better than average size for Cunningham with the largest one at 12 inches. Nice weather and a nice day on the lake.
May 10, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I had a planned trip for three to Wanahoo that lasted only a short while before the weather took us off the lake. The forecast was not good so we called it a day after quickly catching a couple of nice bass. The weather has forced some rescheduling of trips lately. Hopefully the weather will straighten out soon.
May 8, 2015
Maple Creek- I took a person to Maple Creek for the day. He wanted to walleye fish and Maple Creek did not disappoint. We caught a quick limit of 16 to 18 inch eater walleye and returned many other walleye, bass and sunfish to the lake. Another great day at Maple Creek.
May 7, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I took a few hours to shore fish at Wanahoo. The bass bite was good for both numbers and size with most of the bass from 17 to 18 inches. The bass continue to grow at a good pace at Wanahoo.
May 5, 2015
Zorinsky Lake- I met a couple at Zorinsky for a morning fishing trip. They wanted to catch some crappie for a meal and he wanted to learn how to catch walleyes. Both the crappie and the walleye were biting. They caught lots of crappie with most between 6 and 10 inches and they caught about twenty walleye from 10 to 14 inches. A very good morning of fishing. Zorinsky was restocked a few years ago and is developing nicely.
May 3, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met a father and his three children at Walnut Creek for a morning of fishing. They are a family that enjoys the simple pleasure of spending time together catching fish. They caught very good numbers of crappie and bluegill. A very nice morning of fishing with a father and his children.
May 2, 2015
Walnut Creek- I stayed at Walnut Creek for an afternoon trip with a father and his two sons. We headed out in the boat to catch fish and, just like the morning trip, to show them spots where they could catch fish from shore. They caught many crappie, some bluegill, bass and a catfish. They released all the fish. Always a good day to take a father and his sons out on the lake to catch fish.
May 2, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met two friends at Walnut Creek for a morning trip. They do not own a boat and wanted to target areas where they could catch fish from from shore. We stopped at several spots and caught numerous crappie along with some bluegill and bass. A very simple and successful fishing trip.
May 1, 2015
Maple Creek- I took two people to Maple for some walleye fishing. Maple Creek was again outstanding. We were able to keep a limit of 16 to 18 inch walleyes in just a couple of hours. We also caught many bass up to 15 inches. They caught their limit so fast they wanted me to help them learn to better fish a private lake one of them has a lot on. We caught lots of 8 inch crappie, some more walleyes, drum, bluegill and some larger bass. An excellent day of fishing.
April 30, 2015
Youngman Lake- I took a father and son to Youngman Lake for a half day of crappie fishing. We could see many crappie sitting very shallow on the beds. We had our best success being very, very stealthy and dropping small jigs in front of the fish from a distance with long rods. We caught fair numbers of nice crappie along with some nice bluegill and some bass. A very challenging bite that resulted in some nice crappie for a meal.
April 27, 2015
Maple Creek- I took two people to Maple Creek for a day of fishing. The target fish was walleye and the bite was on. We boated over fifty walleye from 13 to 18 inches. We also boated excellent numbers of 12 to 15 inch bass, catfish, bullhead, crappie and you could catch all the bluegill you would ever care to catch. The weather was very pleasant and we had an outstanding walleye day on the lake.
April 24, 2015
Linoma Beach- I had a trip with two people to Linoma Beach. One had recently purchased a membership and wanted to better learn where and how to catch fish, especially crappie, at Linoma. We motored around the lake and stopped at different fish holding spots. They were both very capable fisherman and were quickly catching many fish. We learned that Linoma is a very high quality crappie lake. They caught excellent numbers of quality crappie with most of the crappie from 11 to 12 inches long. They also caught lots of bass, sunfish that approached master angler size and we caught a 10 inch perch. A great day on the lake.
April 23, 2015
Prairie Queen- I spent a couple hours from shore Prairie Queen. This new lake has a tremendous populations of 10 to 14 inch bass. I could see fifty bass in some areas of the water. When bass are in clear shallow water in the spring, a fluke is my lure of choice. The bass could not resist the fluke. The bass are not large yet, but they are a lot of fun to catch.
April 22, 2015
Maple Creek- I took a trip to Maple Creek Reservoir with a person. The target fish was walleyes and they cooperated very well. We caught about 20 walleyes with most from 15 to 18 inches along with good numbers of bass and a couple of bluegill. All the fish were caught on plastics. A great walleye day in this part of Nebraska.
April 17, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met a person at Walnut Creek for the afternoon. He likes to eat fish so we targeted panfish. We caught many panfish and had an above normal day for size of crappie with most of the crappie over 10 inches. We also picked up good numbers of bass. The weather was outstanding and this time of year that translates into a good day on the lake.
April 16, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I had a trip with an excellent bass fisherman who took an afternoon off to fish while in town on business. We figured out the pattern on the bass in about a half hour and proceeded to have a very productive day of bass fishing. One of the better days of bass fishing days one can have in this area for both numbers and size with most of the bass over 17 inches. Excellent weather and excellent fishing. We even caught two very nice walleye.
April 13, 2015
Walnut Creek Lake- I met a father and his five year old boy at Walnut Creek. The father had done very little fishing and wanted to start taking his children fishing. We focused on catching fish, mainly bluegills. The weather and the bite was excellent and the young boy was getting a bite every cast. He landed many bluegill from 6 to 8 inches along with a crappie. A great first time fishing trip for a father and his young son.
April 11, 2015
East Twin- My son was back for the weekend and we headed to East Twin Lake. This was our first trip to East Twin which is one of the few lakes in eastern Nebraska with white bass. We scouted and fished numerous locations. Most of the fish we marked were in the main lake basin. We caught some active walleye and white bass that moved up shallow from the main basin. We released all the fish today. East Twin has the appearance of a lake that should be productive during the summer time crankbait bite. I hope to make it back out and try the lake again this summer.
April 6, 2015
Maple Creek- I drove to Maple Creek to see if the driving distance would be feasible for guided trips. The lake would be about an hour and fifteen to thirty minute drive with a boat. I fished from shore for about three hours. I caught some bass, bluegill and six male walleye from 16 to 18 inches. I will fish the lake a few more times, if the walleye can be caught consistently, the drive will be worth it.
April 5, 2015
Youngman Lake- My wife and I wanted to eat some crappie for supper. We went to Youngman and fished for about two hours. We caught about thirty bass and ten crappie. We kept five 10 inch crappie for a meal.
April 4, 2015
Walnut Creek- I spent a few hours in the boat at Walnut Creek. The crappie, bass and bluegill were all on a good bite. The warmer than normal temperatures has the bite is better than normal for this time of year.
April 2, 2015
Walnut Creek and Prairie Queen- My wife and I wanted to eat some fish for supper and I wanted to check out the new lake Prairie Queen. I first stopped by Walnut Creek and shore fished for panfish. The bluegill bite was very good with many fish from 7 to 8 inches along with a half dozen crappie. I kept some fish for supper and then went to Prairie Queen to see if I could catch some fish from shore. The bass bite was crazy good in spots with fish every cast in some areas. All of the bass were from 12 to 14 inches. Prairie Queen has some excellent habitat probably just needs another year or two to have good numbers of quality fish. Certainly was fun to catch loads of fish.
April 1, 2015
Two Rivers- I do not typically fish Two Rivers but went out to see if I could catch some smallmouth bass. Two Rivers 5 is the only lake in the area with smallmouth. Lake 5 is also stocked with trout. I was not able to catch any smallmouth but the trout bite was great. The trout bit on plastic worms, jigs, wacky rigs, small spoons and anything else I through in the water. The Game and Parks emphasizes that the trout are stocked to help kids learn to catch fish and they certainly were easy to catch. I released all the fish.
March 31, 2015
Wehrspann Lake- I met a person at Wehrspann for an afternoon of fishing. We targeted crappie and caught them in many places. Only a few had moved into the shallows. Most were staging in front of the shallows. Overall the size was small. We released all the fish today. I will fish Wehrspann again and if the fish are again smaller than normal for Wehrspann, I will target other lakes for crappie.
March 30, 2015
Youngman Lake- I had a trip with a person at Youngman Lake this afternoon. We started out targeting bluegills and caught a few up to 9 inches but the bite was a little slow. We switched to crappie and they were very cooperative. The majority of the crappie were around 10 inches. The temperatures were very comfortable and he had a very good afternoon of fishing.
March 28, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- I went to Wanahoo to bass fish. The water temperatures were in the mid 40's. I marked fish north of the walkway and fished there for the afternoon. I caught some very nice bass. The bite was a tough bite because of the location of the fish but a good aggressive bite if done properly.
March 27, 2015
Walnut Creek- I fished from shore at Walnut Creek for a few hours to see if any panfish had moved in close enoughto catch. I caught very good numbers of bluegill up to 9 inches. I was surprised at the numbers of bluegill near shore this time of year. Bluegills near shore are a great way to get kids hooked on fishing.
March 18-20, 2015
Stockton Lake, Missouri- My son, his friend and I headed to Stockton Lake for a few days to finish up his spring break. The weather was rainy and in the low 40's the first two days and warmed up into the 50's the final day. The fishing was better than anticipated considering the weather. We caught good numbers of largemouth bass and white bass along with crappie, walleye and catfish. Another good trip to Lake Stockton.
March 16, 2015
Youngman Lake- My son and I went to Youngman for a few hours. We found a very good early season location for the bass, crappie and bluegill. The location was easy to fish and should hold early season fish when the water warms each spring.
March 14, 2015
Lake Wanahoo- My son and I went to Wanahoo for a few hours. We found lots of crappie and some bass. The fish were north of the walkway. The crappie were stacked in many areas but were smaller. The bulk of the bigger "new lake" crappie have been caught at Wanahoo but there have been some huge class years that should provide some excellent crappie fishing in the future. The bass are good sized and with the 21 inch minimum in the lake and should stay that way for a while.
March 2, 2015
Czechland Lake- I took a person to Czechland for a day of ice fishing. He brought his underwater camera. This was my first experience at viewing fish through an underwater camera. We moved around to stacks of fish and I was able to show him how to use the lure through the eyes of the camera, which was very beneficial. He caught tremendous numbers of bluegill and crappie. Nice weather for ice fishing and a great day on the ice.
March 1, 2015
Czechland Lake- I took a newcomer to ice fishing to Czechland. We walked out to an area that holds lots of fish and I proceeded to take him through the steps of catching fish through the ice. Czechland was again a great place to take a beginner. He was able to learn the techniques to catch many fish through it ice. We released all the fish today. A very relaxing day of fishing.
February 28, 2015
Wildwood Lake- I met two brothers at Wildwood Lake for the day. The fishing was similar to the day before with very good numbers of nice sized bluegills and good numbers of crappie. I grilled brats on the ice. They both enjoy fishing and they had a very good day of ice fishing.
February 27, 2015
Wildwood Lake- I took a person to Wildwood for a day of ice fishing. The weather was cold but a lack of wind and plentiful sunshine made for some pleasant ice fishing weather. The fishing was very good with lots of nice bluegill and decent numbers of crappie up to 13 inches. A very nice day on the ice.
February 23 and 24, 2015
Walnut Creek, Czechland, and Wildwood Lake- I checked the ice conditions and fished these lakes for a short while these two days. Walnut Creek had some very good ice and some very bad ice with some scattered stretches of open water. BE VERY AWARE AND CAUTIOUS. I caught good numbers of bluegill and crappie. The crappie were all small. Some of the bluegill were over 8 inches. Czechland had good to very good ice throughout most of the lake. The bluegill bite was very good with several fish over 8 inches. Wildwood had good ice throughout most of the lake. Lots of crappie biting with sizes ranging from 8 to 12 inches.
January 19, 2015
Czechland Lake- A couple from central Nebraska met me at Czechland. He is recently retired and they greatly enjoy outdoor activities together as a couple. They wanted to learn how to ice fish and Czechland is a great lake to teach people. We started on an area that was loaded with fish. I showed them how to mark fish and the lures and techniques to catch them. We went to different parts of the lake and they learned how to look through the ice to find and catch fish. They caught lots of fish. Great weather and a great day on the ice.
January 18, 2015
Czechland Lake- I took three friends to Czechland for the day. This was very much a social fishing trip. They drank beer and did a lot of guy talk (what is said on the ice stays on the ice) The bite was on and they caught tremendous numbers of fish. The weather was outstanding with highs in the 50's and light winds. I cooked brats and they had a great time.
January 16, 2015
Wildwood Lake- I had a trip with a person who moved to Nebraska from Louisiana. He greatly enjoys fishing but had never "walked" on water before. He put on some spikes, we walked out on the ice and immediately marked fish. He is a very good fisherman and was catching fish right away. The fish were stacked today and he caught tremendous numbers of crappie along with some nice bluegills and a few bass. He kept a limit of nice crappie and learned how northern fisherman extend their season during the hard water time of year.
January 15, 2015
Wildwood Lake- I took two friends to Wildwood for a day on the ice. They caught moderate numbers of fish to start the day then moved to an area that held a lot of fish. They caught very good numbers of bluegill up to 9 inches and crappie up to 12 inches. The temperatures was in the 40's, I grilled brats on the ice and they had an excellent day of fishing.
January 13, 2015
Wildwood Lake- I took a father and son to Wildwood to teach them how to better ice fish. We shot through the ice to locate fish, drilled holes and proceeded to catch fish. They caught many nice bluegill up to 9 inches and nice crappie up to 11 inches. They kept some for a meal and released the rest. The weather was pleasant and they had a nice day of learning and catching fish.
January 11, 2015
Davis Creek- My nephew from Grand Island wanted me to fish with him at Davis Creek. I had never been on Davis Creek before so I let him lead me to the fish. We were able to catch some very nice crappie and a few walleyes but not the stacks of fish he frequently catches on Davis Creek. We kept ten nice crappie for a meal for his family and released the rest of the fish. Davis Creek is on a good cycle for quality fish and hopefully I will be able to meet him for a boat trip later in the year.
January 10, 2015
Czechland Lake- I took a father and his two sons out to Czechland for their first ice fishing experience. The wind was very strong to start the day so we hunkered down and I taught them how to catch fish through the ice. The wind let up in the afternoon and we moved to other good spots on the lake. Czechland was again a great lake for beginning ice fishermen-- lots of fish with some nice quality fish in the mix. Always nice to help a father and sons enjoy a day of fishing.
January 8, 2015
Czechland Lake- I took three young men that were new to ice fishing to Czechland. The fishing were biting with lots of crappie and bluegill. The crappie were up to 13 inches and some of the bluegill approached 9 inches. The wind was howling but we stayed warm in the huts and were able to sit on fish all day long. A very good day on the lake.
January 6, 2015
Lake Cunningham- I took a friend to Cunningham to try and learn the lake. I have boat fished Cunningham many times with good success but this was my first time ice fishing the lake. I was able to find bluegills but not the crappie or walleye I was hoping for. Most times when I ice fish a lake I can use my open water fishing experience to locate the desired species through the ice. This was not the case today.
January 5, 2015
Walnut Creek- I met father, son and son-in-law at Walnut Creek for some ice fishing. The father and son were new to ice fishing and wanted to learn to fish a lake in the metro area. I showed how to shoot through the ice with a flasher and locate fish. We would then drill holes and start catching fish. The wind chills were below zero which prohibited us from moving as much as I would like but we were able to find some active fish and catch good numbers of sunfish along with about a dozen crappie. Overall a good day on the ice. Walnut Creek still had an open patch of water. Use caution.
January 2. 2015
Wildwood Lake- My wife's family is in town and I took a group of them to Wildwood for a fun outing. The weather was very pleasant and the fishing was very good. We caught many bluegill in the 8 inch range, crappie up to 12 inches and several bass. I grilled brats on the ice and everyone had a great time. An excellent way to spend time together over the holidays.
January 1, 2015
Walnut Creek- I headed to Walnut Creek to check on ice conditions and fish a few hours. The ice was overall good at Walnut Creek but there was a fairly large area of water being kept open by geese. I caught many bluegill with most of them in the 6 to 7 inch range with only a few around 8 inches.
